A load of danger

2013-10-21 00:00

A TRUCK overloaded by almost two tons was impounded, and the driver arrested, when the vehicle was stopped at the Mkondeni Weighbridge in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

The driver was using a single truck to transport cargo that should have been transported in two trucks.

He is expected to appear in court in Pietermaritzburg today.

The driver was nabbed when his truck had been diverted for weighing, as is done with many trucks coming off the N3.

RTI spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said they were not sure exactly what the truck was carrying, but believed it was transporting containers from Durban to Johannesburg.

She said the truck was carrying two containers with a total mass of 74 840 kg, meaning it was overloaded by 1 840 kg.

“The truck was overloaded to the extent that the cargo it was carrying would have at least required a second truck to transport it.”

Mngomezulu said the owner of the truck would not escape the wrath of the law, and would have to explain how the driver was allowed to leave the loading yard.

Another RTI official, Collin Govender, said the operators and the owners have no excuse. “The first excuse those responsible for loading the truck give is that they did not know what was in the container, but surely they have ways of checking what is inside?”

He said the overloading is how many horrible runaway truck accidents happen. “The overloading damages the road, puts a strain on the truck, on the brakes and that is how brake failure occurs.”

Govender said the justice system should really pass heavy sentences on those who are responsible.
