A name that will live on

2008-07-17 00:00

PEOPLE in villages, towns, countries and cities throughout the world have seen fit to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela by giving his name to a range of entities.

As one would expect, streets, highways, buildings, and awards have been named for him, but the list of tributes also includes some unexpected tributes — a nuclear particle, a landfill site, and a spider to name but a few.

The nuclear particle, called the Mandela Particle, was discovered by the British Institute of Physics at Leeds University, England; and the landfill site is in Guyana.

Also named for Madiba are is seaslug called the Mandelia Microcornata; the Madiba protea (protea cyneroides); a spider called Singafrotypa Mandela which is found in Botswana, South Africa and the Ivory Coast; a race horse in Australia; and a rescue dog in the USA.
