A proud display of our heritage

TRADITIONS old and new could be seen all over the streets of Pietermaritzburg yesterday as people celebrated Heritage and National Braai Day.

Family and friends came together to share in double celebration, either by lighting a fire for a braai, dressing up in traditional clothing or doing both.

The Gobey family came together and set up their braai on the side of Mayor’s Walk in memory of their beloved friend Reg Budree, who died last month at the age of 57 after falling ill.

“Last year we were going to go to the park, but Reg suggested we braai here outside our house. Now we will always braai here every year to honour his memory,” said a member of the Gobey family.

There were many braai fires lit at Alexandra Park, one of which brought a huge congregation together.

The members of the Bethel Assembly Church met at the park for a family day and to celebrate their heritage.

Dressed in various traditional outfits, the men bunched together watching over the meat on the braai while the women and children played games in the park.

Fortunate Nsthele did not take a day off work on the public holiday, but still honoured Heritage Day by dressing in full traditional Zulu attire.

Nsthele, a local street vendor in Burger Street, wore colourful beads on her neck, a hat and had white decorations painted on her face.

Nsthele was not alone in her choice to dress up for Heritage Day as traditional outfits could be seen all over the CBD, proving how proud people are of their heritage.
