A revealing look into the life of one of the world’s top tennis icons

2012-02-15 00:00

I HAVE always been a tennis fan, but it wasn’t until I witnessed the 2006 Dubai Tennis Championship that I became hooked on the sport.

Rafael Nadal is possibly the most talked-about tennis icon of the decade, and so it was with enthusiasm that I read Rafa My Story.

It is a good read for those who are fascinated by the man and his exploits on the court, even if the book focuses too much on the 2008 Wimbledon final between him and his on-court nemesis, Roger Federer, a rivalry (and friendship) which has shaped the game in its current form.

I always say that there is more to sports personalities and celebrities than meets the eye, and that you often get shocked when you find out about their personal lives. This book does just that. The private Nadal and the Nadal whom we see on the court are two completely different people.

Rather than just a tale of all of his accomplishments, Rafa, My Story focuses on the hard work he went through to be the player that he is today. Carlin focuses on the personalities of Nadal’s support team, and the behind-the-scenes preparation that went into Nadal’s famous victory over Federer in that 2008 final.

It is a well-written book, and is a testament to how hard work and determination can often be just as effective as raw talent. Because of Nadal’s contribution to his sport, the book will capture a young audience, who will identify with the man, and come to see how one can still be humble with the world at your feet.
