A star in the making

A CLARENDON Primary and Carter High School Pupil, now studying at the University of Cape Town, recently won the coveted Moira Lister Theatre Award for the best drama student for 2010.

Keeran Blessie (22) was already making his mark in the acting world when he was featured in The Witness aged 11 years old for his achievements in the Star Search Competition for his role as the wolf in the Three Little Pigs.

Blessie, a fourth-year drama student at UCT, was earlier in the year chosen along with another student to work with a professional company in The Hague. This was his first professional engagement and his first outside the country.

“It’s been a whirlwind. I’ve had an exceptional year. I think I found the news of me winning unbelievable,” said the vibrant and energetic Blessie.

“I have had so many good things this year that this was honestly unexpected. But the glory comes back every day when I see my shiny trophy in my lounge,” he added.

“Drama has always been a passion of mine. I remember being in Clarendon Primary School and being selected to do a school play. Afterwards our drama teacher must have seen something in me and put me forward for Star Search,” said Blessie.

He believes this achievement built a love and commitment for what he does.

“My friends are mostly actors so we make jokes all the time and impersonate everyone. But I think when I hit my final year in high school it was no longer a choice. It was inevitable. I enjoy looking at the world with innocent eyes. I constantly want to push boundaries. I believe by constantly challenging myself I will constantly grow. And training helps.”
