A succesfull sound

Although their ‘official’ history puts it slightly differently, The Traveling Wilburys, in a sense, owed their existence to ex-Beatle George Harrison.

Stuck for an idea about what to put on the ‘B’ side of This is Love, a single from his Cloud Nine album, he decided to enlist the help of a bunch of his mates who just happened to include rock legends Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. What began as a side project quickly developed into a major-league production as the five frontmen, realising the power of the force they had unleashed, decided to continue with their collaboration — albeit under assumed names.

Crafty and astute and packed solid with swinging original tunes in the classic mould, it has much to offer in the way of its gorgeous guitar soundscapes and sharp, memorable melodies and imagery — all underpinned with a healthy dollop of good humour. The album proved an enormous success, selling over five million copies while Rolling Stone magazine would go on to name it one of the 100 Best Albums of All Time.

Their second effort broke no new groud and was essentially a formulaic reprise. While not as instantly memorable as their first outing, it still had plenty of zip and charm and yielded several hit singles.

All in all a delicious collection of rollicking rock ‘n roll played with spit and spirit, this commemorative package includes both CDs as well as a DVD of the band performing.
