A tribute to the Carpenters

2011-01-13 00:00

THE music of one of the biggest bands of the 1970s, The Carpenters, is celebrated and brought to life again in Yesterday Once More at the Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest until January 23.

No fewer than ten of the group’s singles went on to become million-sellers, and by 2005 the combined worldwide sales of albums and singles exceeded 100 million units.

The Heritage show takes a de-constructed look at the works of Richard and Karen Carpenter, and includes well-known songs like Close To You, I Won’t Last A Day Without You, T op Of The World, Only Yesterday, Rainy Days And Mondays and We’ve Only Just Begun; as well as their rearrangements of songs like The Beatles’ Ticket To Ride.

Yesterday Once More, which ran to packed houses last year, features Marion Loudon and Melanie Roberts, backed by Dawn Selby, Barry Thomson on guitar, Glen Turrell on bass and Andy Turrell on drums, pedal steel and anything else he can get his hands on.

If you’re a Carpenters fan then this one is definitely not to be missed.

• Tickets are R165 on Tuesday and Sunday and R190 Wednesday to Saturday including a two-course meal. To book phone 031 765 4197. — Arts Editor.
