A young boer’s arduous journey to europe

2011-12-14 00:00

THE Unexploded Boer is about a young white South African who could not accept the then racial segregation and the way people were treated according to their skin colour. Erich Rautenbach was still very young when he started roaming between Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, running away from conscription, which he saw as a tool to murder non-whites.

His wish was to have enough money to get out of the country, with Europe being his destination. However, things never got easy for him as he didn’t have a proper job, and was a young man who would rather struggle than ask for hand-outs, even from his mother.

He had friends and had started playing in various bands, a move which never brought him any joy, or any success towards his endeavour to acquire enough money to leave the country.

Buying weed from a rural Zululand area was his only option, and when he started that business he had hope.

Things turned ugly in one of his stunts in Johannesburg when he got arrested, and the drug squad hoped he would confess to selling weed to finance the armed struggle. He survived the ordeal with the support of various friends until he decided to pretend to be mentally disturbed.

When the psychiatrist recommended that he be taken to a mental institution for observation, Rautenbach knew his opportunity to make an escape had arrived. He did, and with the assistance of his mother back in Cape Town, he managed to get a cruise ticket to Europe.
