ANC-NFP:fights over positions hurt coalition

2012-09-19 00:00

DISPUTES over filling in ofsenior positions in municipalities run jointly by the ANC and the National Freedom Party were why their co-operation agreement was taking strain.

NFP secretary-general Professor Nhlanhla Khubisa said in Durban yesterday that jostling for positions and disagreements over the disbursement of funds were the reasons his party’s councillors were voting with the Inkatha Freedom Party against the ANC, in violation of their coalition agreement.

NFP councillors recently colluded with their IFP counterparts to oust the ANC mayors in Nkandla and Estcourt, where the NFP and ANC are co-governing. The parties co-govern 19 municipalities in KZN.

Khubisa said that “most of the challenges revolve around the employment of Section 56 and 57 posts [municipal managers and directors] and the replacement of the officials in these posts”.

He said that while there were problems, the NFP was not abandoning the coalition with the ANC.
