ANC: Race is on for KZN chairmanship

2013-02-07 00:00

THE race for the position of ANC KwaZulu-Natal chairperson is in full swing, with two candidates being lobbied within the party structures.

The nomination process officially opened last Friday, and speculation is rife that Transport MEC Willies Mchunu and Education MEC Senzo Mchunu are vying for the top position.

They are both on the provincial executive committee. Willies Mchunu is the deputy provincial chairman and Senzo Mchunu is an ordinary member.

The ANC Women’s League has already thrown its weight behind the Transport MEC after withdrawing the nomination of KZN Legislature speaker Peggy Nkonyeni.

The SA Communist Party recently suggested that the ANC deputy chairperson should have held the vacant position until the next elective conference, but this was shot down by the ANC, accusing its alliance partner of venturing into its internal affairs. The SACP has no voting power in ANC elections.

Senzo Mchunu commands backing from some ANC regions, including Moses Mabhida and Lower South Coast.

Asked whether he was in the leadership race, Senzo Mchunu declined to comment.

Willies Mchunu said those people wishing him to stand for provincial chairperson should lobby the branches.
