ANC Ward 10 meeting gets heated

2011-11-22 00:00

THE ANC branch general meeting (BGM) in Ward 10, which was held in kwaPata Hall in Edendale at the weekend, descended into chaos with members exchanging blows.

One member even took out a gun, but police prevented the situation from turning ugly.

The Witness has learnt that there are divisions within the ward, with some people supporting the former councillor, Musawenkosi Mchunu, while others support current councillor Msizi Ngcobo.

Ngcobo’s supporters, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the chaos on Sunday was caused by Mchunu, who confronted the branch youth league chairperson, Sandile Zuma, about his accusation that Mchunu was the reason why the meeting did not have a quorum.

This led to an argument where a member produced a gun and some were beaten.

Mchunu said he was not even present when the meeting ended because had gone to buy refreshments for the delegates and when he returned, he was told about Zuma’s utterances and wanted to find out what prompted him to say such things in his absence.

“I am a member of the ANC and just because I am no longer a councillor it does not mean that I cannot engage on political issues of the ANC,” said Mchunu.

Zuma declined to comment.

Ngcobo confirmed that Mchunu was the reason why the BGM could not sit because as branch secretary he had failed to deposit membership fees. “I know that some people don’t want the BGM to meet a quorum because they don’t want us to participate in the regional conference,” he said.

Supa Zuma, ANC Moses Mabhida secretary, said he is aware of the matter but needs a detailed report before action can be taken.

Police confirmed that they were on standby, but said no cases were opened.
