ANC and DA go head to head for council seat in Howick

2013-01-29 00:00

THE ANC and the Democratic Alliance are the only two parties to contest tomorrow’s by-election in Howick.

The ward five council seat became vacant after DA councillor Tim Lindsay-White resigned for personal reasons.

The ANC candidate is Mlungisi Msomi, who grew up in the Karkloof area and has a teaching background.

uMngeni Mayor Mbali Myeni said Msomi was the secretary of the ANC branch in ward five.

“He was instrumental in championing discussions between the municipality and residents in Karkloof over service delivery issues, and as a result there is currently an electrification programme being carried out in the area,” she said.

The DA candidate is John Lewis, who is the chairperson of the SPCA in Howick.

He has an accountancy background and is a former mayor of Bedfordview.

DA caucus leader Pam Passmoor said Lewis had been a longstanding resident of Howick and was a very community orientated person who was passionate about whatever he tackled.

uMngeni municipal manager Mpilo Ngubane said there were 4 336 registered voters in the ward.

• The four voting stations that will be open from 7 am to 9 pm will be the Roman Catholic Church in Howick, Trianda School, Yarrow School and the Marquee in Amberfield.
