ANC condemns ‘misguided gimmickry’ of opposition

2014-12-11 00:00

THE fifth democratic Parliament had been characterised by “rampant anarchy, disorder and sheer roguishness” which had tarnished the institution and undermined its integrity, according to the ANC.

In its year-end caucus statement yesterday, the ANC criticised the “misguided gimmickry and wanton disregard for the rules and laws governing the institution”.

“The unquenchable thirst for headlines by some opposition parties through relentless stunts, rather than substance and robust debates that would take our country and her people forward, has unfortunately seen the regression of this six-month-old fifth parliament,” the office of the chief whip, Stone Sizani said.

Accusing opposition parties of entering into a “desperate and shameless unholy alliance”, the ANC said the only thing that this had achieved was making media headlines. “The desperate and shameless alliances have exposed deep ideological bankruptcies, which saw a party that purports to be a champion of land expropriation [EFF] indulging in public displays of affection with the defenders of ill-gotten land [FF+] while surrendering itself to its new master, the custodian of white privilege and symbol of anti-transformation, the DA.”

The ANC welcomed the disciplinary steps taken against the 20 EFF MPs, saying that the parliamentary rules and laws “have teeth and thus must bite”.

Highlighting the party’s commitment to grassroots initiatives, the ruling party said that its Back to Basics programme emphasised constituency work. During these periods, each MP would be required to submit information sheets to the chief whip’s office regarding the service delivery situation in municipalities.
