ANC crushes rivals in South Coast poll

HOTLY contested by-election on the South Coast on Wednesday turned into a one-horse race as the ANC crushed its rivals.

The ruling party defeated the National Freedom Party and the Inkatha Freedom Party, winning 1 467 votes in Ward 7 in Vulamehlo Municipality.

The NFP attracted 304 votes and the IFP a paltry 75.

The by-election was held to replace an ANC councillor who died in a vehicle accident in January. The new councillor is Zakhele Hlongwa.

Mawethu Mosery of the provincial Independent Electoral Commission said the election had gone well.

“There was a large voter turnout and the winning candidate secured 79% of the votes.”

He said no complaints had been received about the conduct of the by-election.

ANC provincial spokesperson Senzo Mkhize said: “We are not surprised by what we have achieved. We have on several occasions indicated that there is a huge gap between the ANC and other political parties in KwaZulu-Natal. The political balance of forces is in our favour and there is a huge demand for our organisation throughout the length and breadth of the province,” he said

“We have full confidence in the newly elected Hlongwa and we have no doubt that he will continue spearheading service delivery in this ward on behalf of the ANC.”
