ANC denies it funded VZ

THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal described as “fake” and “desperate” the IFP’s accusation that it is bankrolling the National Freedom Party (NFP) announced yesterday by former IFP national chairperson Zanele “VZ” Magwaza-Msibi .

After the launch of the new party the IFP released a “confidential” memorandum to the media which it claims was leaked to it by sources within the ANC. The memorandum, dated December 20, states that the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) was involved in coercing Magwaza-Msibi to establish the party.

It reads that the ANC has taken a decision to accommodate Magwaza-Msibi in its ranks and offer her an MEC position.

“Although the NEC is sceptical about it, because this might cause a recipe for violence between the two parties in the province, Mrs Magwaza-Msibi has accepted an offer of being appointed as MEC.

“The NEC has taken a resolution to give her the support during her troubles with the IFP and also on the day of a court decision. The ANCYL has thrown its weight behind Mrs Magwaza-Msibi and also vowed to mobilise the youth to ensure that all IFP strongholds in Zululand are destabilised and taken over through propaganda mechanisms … Inkatha must die once and for all,” reads the purported memorandum.

IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi also accused the ANC of being behind the formation of the NFP.

“The split in the IFP is not about policies and values, but about personal ambition,” he said.

“Another facet of this political phenomenon is the ruling party attracting within its fold all other components of black society, which spells the demise of the democracy we fought for for so many generations.

“The new party was registered months ago and there are plenty of indications that it received financial support from the very political forces which the IFP’s democratic vigilance intends to hold accountable and keep under check and balance,” Buthelezi added.

ANC KZN provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said the ANC needs no new party for its support base to expand.

“We have equally noticed the desperate attempts by the IFP of trying to portray the formation of this new party as sponsored by the ANC.

“The fake copy of minutes which the Buthelezi and the IFP are distributing are generated to try to hide away from the embarrassment of their dying party.”

During the launch of the NFP Magwaza-Msibi denied having received funds from the ANC or being involved in any clandestine meetings with the president of the ANC.
