ANC fires Richmond councillors

2014-08-19 00:00

THE ANC has given marching orders to three councillors in the Richmond Municipality.

The council speaker, Thulani Shabalala, and ward councillors Douglas Kunene and Musawakhe Jili, have been given until the end of August to resign as councillors.

They were allegedly given their marching orders by the ANC provincial secretary, Sihle Zikalala, at a meeting held on Friday in Richmond.

ANC insiders said the party was acting on the recommendations of National Executive Committee member Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma that ward councillors who did not live in their wards should be removed.

“That is how they came to the conclusion of asking councillor Jili to resign from his position as Ward 6 councillor,” said the source.

He said the two other councillors were removed based on recommendations from the ANC’s regional leadership.

“There had been complaints from ANC branches that Shabalala and Kunene both lived in Ward 7, but were both voted as councillors by the community of Ward 2,” he said.

Other sources said the council leadership was also instructed by Zikalala to call an urgent council meeting yesterday to rescind a decision to employ a traffic officer who had been fired by the municipality for being negligent with a council vehicle.

Zikalala confirmed holding the Friday meeting, but would not comment further, saying they would issue a statement on the Richmond issue.
