‘ANC has hired a hit man’

THE Inkatha Freedom Party has accused the ANC of hiring a hit man to assassinate newly elected Umtshezi (Estcourt) mayor and his deputy after their man was booted out on Tuesday.

Trouble started when the IFP and the National Freedom Party ousted ANC Mayor Bongani Dlamini through a vote of no confidence.

They replaced him with his deputy Bhekithemba Dlamini of the NFP and appointed the IFP’s Mthembeni Majola to deputise him.

Majola told The Witness yesterday that the ANC had hired a “hit men” to kill him and the mayor.

He claimed the hit man was a bodyguard of ANC councillor Siphamandla Magubane and had been sent to the municipality to “shoot and kill”.

Majola said the man had walked into the council chambers with a gun on Wednesday, but was arrested by the police after going through the municipal security undetected with a loaded 9 mm pistol.

“The way he was pushing people around we suspected that something was up so we asked the police to search him and they found a 9 mm pistol loaded with bullets,” Majola said.

“What was disturbing was that the man made it through the municipal security with a weapon,” Majola said.

NFP national organiser Bonga Nzuza said they had been informed about the incident and were “leaving the matter in the hands of the police”.

Magubane refuted the allegations, saying: “I am an ordinary councillor, I do not have a bodyguard”.

He admitted knowing the arrested man as someone he “sometimes gave a lift to” on his way home.

Senzo Mkhize of the ANC said the utterances of the IFP were misleading and aimed at sowing instability in the area.

“It is not true that the ANC has hired a hit man to kill them, what we know is that this [arrest] happened outside the council [offices]. The police saw something protruding from the man and searched him.”

Municipal manager Nohlanhla Njokwe said as far as she was aware, no one had been arrested in the municipal building.

The Estcourt police said they were not aware of any allegations of an attempt to assassinate the new municipal officials, but confirmed arresting a 41-year-old man on municipal property in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
