ANC in KZN deny plan to ask Zuma not to stand for president

2014-01-28 00:00

THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has vehemently denied reports that some regional leaders in the province planned to approach President Jacob Zuma to ask him not to stand for a second term as the country’s president.

“In our investigation, there is no such [thing]. It is a campaign to create divisions within the party and create an impression that KZN is divided,” ANC provincial spokesperson Senzo Mkhize said.

The Mail & Guardian on Friday named the lower South Coast, Sisonke and Harry Gwala regions as being suspected of supporting a call for Zuma not to stand for re-election.

The Sunday Independent reported that nine of 11 ANC regions had confirmed the existence of a “resolution” to approach Zuma to abandon standing for a second term.

But the regions reportedly did not know the origins of the discussion, which apparently dated back to late last year.

Yesterday, Mkhize said the provincial ANC leaders concurred with the regional leadership that they were not involved in efforts to have Zuma discouraged from standing for re-election.
