ANC in KZN to elect new leaders

2014-05-26 00:00

THE regions of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal are expected to hold elective conferences this year to elect new leaders.

This will happen at a time when some of the party’s regional leaders take up their positions as Members of Provincial Legislature (MPLs) in the KZN legislature.

During the swearing-in of MPLs by Judge President Chiman Patel on Wednesday, several regional and provincial leaders took office as public representatives.

They included eThekwini regional chairperson Sibongiseni Dhlomo, Moses Mabhida regional chairperson Alpha Shelembe, Harry Gwala secretary Amon Zondi, Abaqulusi chairperson Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu and Moses Mabhida secretary Supa Zuma.

Regional secretaries Zuma and Zondi were allowed to become public representatives despite their positions in the party requiring them to be full-time employed by the ANC.

This does not apply to regional chairpersons who are not on the payroll of the party.

Party insiders said the swearing-in of the regional secretaries was a clear indication that they would not stand for re-election.

This happens as lobbying for preferred candidates is getting under way in the 11 regions.

ANC provincial spokesperson Senzo Mkhize said the full-time secretaries would vacate their positions when the elective conferences were held.

He, however, could not specify when exactly the regions were expected to hold the conferences except to say the programme for their hosting has yet to be finalised.

Meanwhile, the ANC Youth League is expected to hold its own provincial elective conference this year after its leadership was disbanded a few years ago.
