ANC killings: suspect in police vehicle chased

2012-09-14 00:00

AROUND 100 shouting protesters in Ramsgate yesterday chased after a police vehicle carrying Port Shepstone’s ANC Youth League chairperson, Sifiso Joel Khumalo.

Khumalo (31) is one of two men accused of the latest killings of senior ANC leaders on the South Coast.

Before the protesters gave chase, police officers whisked him out of the court building where the crowd believed he would appear and into the waiting vehicle.

The protesters followed the speeding vehicle for about 40 metres up a slight incline, shouting “Yima! Yima!” (Wait! Wait!).

When they stopped, the vehicle was already out of sight and heading for the nearby R61 freeway.

The protesters had thought that Khumalo would plead guilty to murdering the ANC’s Oshabeni chairperson, Dumisani Malunga, and secretary Bheki Chiliza on Sunday.

There were also unconfirmed reports that either Khumalo or his co-accused, Samuel Cele (34), had turned state witness.

According to a reliable source, Khumalo’s case has not yet been transferred from the magistrates’ court to the high court and there has been no formal confirmation of a legal aid attorney for him.

Khumalo and Cele were arrested on Monday.

They are expected to apply for bail in the Port Shepstone Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
