ANC man killed in Muden, says monitor

2009-03-26 00:00

An ANC supporter has been shot dead in Muden, independent violence monitor Mary de Haas said yesterday.

She said Muzi Mbambo was shot dead on Tuesday night in the Oshikisheni area.

More than 10 days ago, De Haas noted that Muden was a troublespot. In her monitor alert she reported that ANC supporters held a meeting in the Nkanini area and that when they were dispersing, they were allegedly set upon by a large group of IFP supporters wielding sticks. Four ANC supporters were reportedly hurt, but not badly enough to need medical attention. She said the cases have not been investigated because victims fear they will be targeted if they oay charges. It is alleged that although the police had been informed about the meeting, no preventive action was taken.

"Following the incident, the Muden area is very tense with ANC supporters claiming that they are scared to engage in pre-election canvassing and campaigning," De Haas said.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram confirmed the shooting of Mbambo and said the incident was reported at 7.30 yesterday morning.

Mbambo had been shot twice in the chest. At this stage there is no evidence to show that the shooting was politically motivated, Budhram said.
