ANC targets holiday crowds in votes drive

2011-01-03 00:00

WHILE most political parties shelved their political activities during the festive season, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal took advantage of crowded public gatherings to step up its local government election campaign on the beaches and during festivals.

At most festivals, including the Durban Jazz Festival at Hazelmere Dam in Verulam and uMphithi Festival in Howick, the ruling party had its posters and branding on display

On New Year’s Day it chartered helicopters to flight campaign messages along beaches.

Its banners flew above the KwaDukuza area, Durban and Margate.

The helicopter flight over the popular uMgababa New Year’s picnic on the south coast received a rave reception from thousands of people gathered there.

Among the senior ANC provincial leaders who are part of the campaign were Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube, provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala and provincial spokesperson Makhosi Khoza.

Khoza said the campaign is aimed at targeting people in great numbers “and to show that we are always with them in happier times and sad times”.

“We wanted to wish people a happy New Year and encourage them to register to vote in the local government elections as we want to win more wards this time.”

Khoza would not say how much the campaign has cost the party. She confirmed, however, that it paid normal rates for hiring a helicopter — about R5 500 an hour.

She confirmed the New Year’s Day campaign lasted about six hours.
