ANC to elect provincial secretary

2009-07-04 00:00

THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is expected to elect a new provincial secretary during its provincial general council (PGC) to be opened by President Jacob Zuma at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Westville Campus) today.

Acting provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala, who is the favourite to snatch the contested position, is pitted against Cosatu’s KZN secretary, Zet Luzipho.

Zikalala acted in the position after former secretary Senzo Mchunu was appointed KZN MEC for Education following the last elections. Zikalala, elected as deputy secretary in 2007, is viewed as having contributed significantly to the ANC’s 62,9% victory in the elections.

Zikalala is said to have also played a pivotal role in ensuring that Zuma was elected president of the ANC at the December 2007 Polokwane national congress.

Speculation has been rife this week that Luzipho, who is also a member of the provincial executive committee (PEC), would stand against Zikalala for the position

The PGC — under the theme of “working together we can do more; now is the time to fight poverty and build a prosperous society” — will decipher the election results and begin preparations for the 2011 local government elections.

The PGC will also seek progress regarding the implementation of the party’s manifesto focusing on fighting crime and corruption, creating work and rural development.

About 1 300 delegates are expected in today’s sitting.
