ANC: ‘well-oiled plan’ to eliminate estcourt members

2013-05-04 00:00

THE ANC in KZN believes that there is a “well-oiled plan” to eliminate its members in Estcourt’s Wembezi township in Umtshezi Municipality.

This follows a spate of shootings and the murders of some of its members in the area, the most recent on Thursday.

ANC member Khithiwe Radebe (37) was “sprayed with a hail of bullets” at Wembezi’s D Section, said ANC provincial spokesperson Senzo Mkhize.

“This happened barely a week after three other ANC members were also shot by unknown assailants in the same township,” he said.

Mkhize said Radebe was near her house when she was shot six times by unknown attackers at around 7 pm. She was in a critical condition in hospital.

“The three comrades shot last week are also still in hospital. One of them was heavily pregnant and unfortunately the baby died and was buried on Thursday,” said Mkhize.

“We are very concerned about the situation in Wembezi. We have lost a lot of comrades in that area. It seems that there is a well-oiled plan to eliminate our members there.”

Mkhize said in April they buried one of their comrades, Sibusiso Majola. In August last year, Umtshezi ward councillor Jimmy Lembede was shot dead and his 11-year-old son was badly assaulted.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said two suspects — Siyabonga Dlamini (19) and Nkomo Vusumuzi (35) — appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on April 5 in connection with Majola’s murder, and were remanded in custody until May 15.

Zwane said police were investigating a case of attempted murder after a 37-year-old woman was shot by unknown suspects.

The ANC called on the police to intensify their search for the attackers and called for political tolerance in the area. — Weekend Witness Reporter.
