ANCYL can’t decide

THE ANC Youth League in KZN faces the prospect of going to its national general council without a position on its leadership preference for the ANC.

This comes after the league’s provincial nominating conference, in Durban on Saturday, was abandoned when the youth body did not form a quorum.

The conference, addressed by ANCYL national executive committee member Abner Mosase, convened to nominate candidates for the ANC leadership before the league consolidates its provincial position on Thursday.

It was scheduled to start at 9 am but, with delegates trickling in, eventually started after 2 pm, only to be cancelled later.

ANCYL provincial task team convenor Vukani Ndlovu said the meeting could not proceed as there was no quorum.

He said the province planned to hold another conference tomorrow.

But, a source in the task team said the conference was deliberately abandoned.

“We had a challenge which was man-made that resulted in us not forming the quorum. When we calculated the number of people in attendance, we found that we made the quorum, but [officials] changed the required figure for the quorum,” said the ANCYL league member.

The conference’s abandonment has fuelled fears that the province will be without a position on ANC leadership as it heads to Mangaung.

“They will say we do not have a view in terms of leadership of the ANC,” Ndlovu added.
