ATHLETICS: On track in Utrecht, off track in Sani Pass

2007-11-23 00:00

THE Thomson Tasty Meats 15 km, hosted by Newlands Athletics club at King’s Park, has become another victim of the Fifa Preliminary World Cup Draw as authorities are apparently unable to handle multiple events on the same weekend.

This means the only road event in the province this weekend is tomorrow’s Sani Stagger.

This event offers three distances, all of which give runners the opportunity to stand on the top of Sani Pass. The first two events start at 6 am from the Sani Pass Hotel. These are the 21-km up-runners and marathoners who face the climb through the clouds to top out at the pass. The finishers in the up race use the vehicles that were used by the down-race marathoners to return to the hotel for prizegiving.

The hospitality, together with the generous handouts and lucky draw prizes, make this a special event.

Runners are advised to put their names down for next year now. Call Trish Crawley on 033 701 1577 or go to

On the track KZNA are hosting a development league event at Utrecht Stadium in Van Rooyen Street, Utrecht on Sunday at 10 am. Moses Xulu has the programme and details on 083 756 3990.

The league is seen as part of a project to continue the growth in the sport that last weekend saw the KZN sub youth team return as champions from the sub youth inter-provincials in Germiston, with 18 team members claiming a medal.
