Abandoned newborn saved by firefighters

2012-10-08 00:00

A NEWBORN baby was abandoned and left to the ants by its teenaged mother close to Melmoth prison early on Friday.

A woman who spotted the baby knocked on the door of the Rural Metro Emergency Management Services, next door to the prison, later that morning.

Firefighters rushed out and found the infant crying and naked, covered in ants.

They cleaned and wrapped her in a blanket.

“EMRS arrived and took the child and the mother (who was located separately) to kwaMagwaza Hospital,” said spokesperson Francis du Toit.

He said a firefighter had told him that the child’s mother is 17 years old and has a nine-month-old child, which is why she kept her second pregnancy a secret. However, the police say she is 19.

Neither the police nor firefighters would elaborate on how the mother was found.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of child abandonment is being investigated.

“It is alleged that a teenage suspect was visiting her stepmother at Melmoth prison, where she works and lives, and she gave birth and hid the baby.

“She was questioned until she acknowledged that the baby belongs to her.

“It is alleged that the suspect was scared to tell her family that she was pregnant, and decided to abandon the baby,” said Zwane.
