Abbott: suffers stroke

2013-07-16 00:00

FORMER boxer and wrestler Jimmy Abbott (54) is being treated in a Heidelberg, Gauteng, hospital after he had suffered a stroke last week.

Pastor Nico Coetzer, with whom Abbott serves as an evangelist, yesterday said Abbott had a stroke last Thursday night.

Abbott’s wife, Annette, said he was doing better and that the doctors said he would recover, but it would take time, Coetzer said.

“He has feeling in his hands and feet, but his speech is still affected at this stage.”

Abbott is a former South African heavyweight champion who beat, among others, Kallie Knoetze. Abbott currently weighs 170 kg after he at one stage reportedly tilted the scales at 400 kg.
