Abortion: accused ‘a flight risk’

2011-10-20 00:00

THE investigating officer, Sergeant Samantha Kerr, yesterday opposed a bail application by Ugandan national Jonathan Kinane (27), who allegedly performed illegal abortions by providing “desperate” women with tablets to abort their babies.

Kerr told the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court that Kinane is a flight risk. He was pointed out by witnesses at an identity parade as an abortionist and is a threat to women and children, she said, and his safety cannot be guaranteed if he is given bail.

Kinane is represented by defence advocate Brad Osborne.

Kinane remains in custody and the bail hearing will proceed on November 9.
