Absa and Legislature give R50 000 for Cindi project

A DONATION of R50 000 was made to Cindi (Children in Distress Network) in support of the Singatha School Uniform Project by the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and Absa Bank last week.

Legislature Speaker Willies Mchunu and Absa board chairman Nhlanhla Gasa said that they made the investment as part of a joint social responsibility project, to assist in the future of vulnerable and orphaned children.

A total of 100 vulnerable children in the greater Pietermaritzburg area will be supplied with school uniforms in the new year.

Cindi was chosen because of its outstanding record in delivering innovative community upliftment projects.

The primary purpose of the Speaker’s social responsibility programme, is “to give communities a ‘head start’ to a better life”, he said.

Mchunu added that when the project was launched in May this year, a call was made to the private sector and community-based organisations to partner with them.

It was from there that a tripartite initiative with the Office of the Speaker, Absa and Cindi came into being.

Cindi director Yvonne Spain said that the network appreciated the networking of Absa and the Legislature, whose concern for children at this time of year translated into “the gift of school uniforms”.
