Abuse: Girl’s murder sparks cleanup effort

GOVERNMENT departments and the community were hard at work over the weekend clearing the bush at Mzwilili Primary School where Nonjabulo Sabela’s body was found last month.

Nonjabulo (8) had gone missing for days when her decomposing body was discovered by her mother after she followed leads of a foul smell at the school.

Weekend Witness reported that Nonjabulo was still wearing her school uniform, her panties lay about four metres away, and her school bag and juice bottle were nearby. She was raped before she was killed and it is believed she was killed somewhere else and later dumped at the school.

Education Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said they put together a task team comprising of various departments in honour of Nonjabulo’s memory.

The task team also launched a cleaning campaign called Safe Schools Campaign. “This was one of the ways to use Nonjabulo’s death to launch a renewed spirited activism against child abuse,” the department said.
