Abuse: children to dialogue in Durban

2011-12-08 00:00

CHILDREN will be breaking the silence against abuse at the National Children’s Dialogue in Durban, which runs from December 11 to 14.

The initiative by Umtapo Centre, which promotes peace and human rights and campaigns against racism, provides a space for children to come up with solutions for the problems they face.

The dialogue will involve 60 participants from children’s peace and empowerment forums collecting issues from their communities and raising them at the gathering.

Umtapo Centre spokesperson Hanna Kim said it is important for children to contribute towards nation building.

“Forums are run by children from KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Eastern Cape between the ages of 10 to 18 years.

“They consult the communities, schools and families on the problems they have, ranging from their future to climate change.

“We then look at this problem with various stakeholders and facilitate in coming up with solutions.

“This is important because the children get to speak instead of us adults talking on their behalf.”

The dialogue will build on ideas to form a national children’s movement and draft a plan of action for 2012. Kim added.
