Academy vs Schools today

2008-08-22 00:00

The curtain-raiser to the Test match between the Springboks and Australia is between the SA Schools XV and the SA Academy XV (12.30 pm).

If the SA Schools squad has not had a tour or matches against other touring sides, they have often played the SA Schools B team. This has caused some embarrassment to the selectors, as the B side has frequently beat the more prestigious A side.

Over six matches in the years from 1999 to 2006, the B team won four. Last year, for the first time, the SA Academy side played SA Schools who won comfortably 50-15.

Today’s game should again see a comfortable victory for the SA Schools side, which contains two KZN players, Patrick Lambie from Michaelhouse at fullback and Shaun Malton from Glenwood at hooker.

On the reserves bench is Njabulo Mkize from Westville.

The SA Academy team includes Koffi Appiah from Maritzburg College who will be on the reserve bench.

A challenge is that most of the players have never played with one another and the combinations will be vital. Ryno Combrink from Michaelhouse is the assistant coach with Academy.
