2014-02-06 00:00

MORE than 50 people were hurt yesterday when a bus transporting 84 passengers crashed on the P34/4 between Vryheid and Paulpietersburg.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said a patient transport bus and advanced life support paramedic were sent to the accident. “Local emergency services and private ambulance services in the area also responded to the accident,” Mackenzie said.

He said 11 of the passengers sustained serious injuries. “Patients were treated on the scene before being transported to Dumbe and Vryheid hospitals for continued care.”

Also yesterday, Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said a truck jack-knifed on the R33 near the Dalton turn-off.

“The road is completely closed. Traffic was diverted to the P159 Enkamazi-Dalton road to rejoin the R33 at New Hanover,” she said.
