Accidents: 18 injured in minibus crashes yesterday in Durban

2010-01-27 00:00

THREE people were seriously injured when a minibus taxi crashed into a lamppost in Sarnia Road, Durban, yesterday afternoon.

It is alleged that the driver of the minibus taxi lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend.

The taxi slid sideways into the pole, the force causing the vehicle to bend around the reinforced steel.

Another accident left 15 people injured, three seriously, when the minibus taxi they were travelling in collided with a bus on Umgeni Road near Durban Station, also yesterday afternoon.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said the driver of the taxi is alleged to have been unable to stop in time and ploughed into the back of the bus.

The injured were stabilised at the scene by Netcare911 paramedics and taken to Addington and Netcare St Augustine’s hospitals.

Wicks said the wet weather played a part in the accidents.

The South African weather bureau in Durban had warned that there was to be heavy rainfall for the rest of the evening yesterday.

Weather forecaster Stacy Colborne said 60% rainfall that could affect evening flights was expected.

“… The same can be said for Wednesday morning [today] as the same measurements are expected, but as the day progresses the percentage is expected to drop to 30,” Colborne said.
