Accused baby snatcher to plead guilty

2014-07-21 00:00

A 20-YEAR-OLD alleged baby snatcher intends to plead guilty to kidnapping a child from the Department of Home Affairs offices in Pietermaritzburg.

Smangele Angeline Sikhosana from Impendle appeared on charges of kidnapping Fanele Asemahle Dlamini, a seven-month-old baby girl from Swayimane.

Fanele was at the Pietermaritzburg Home Affairs offices with her mother, Phumzile Dlamini, when she was snatched on July 8.

Fanele was reunited with her mother last week after an alert caregiver who was visiting Sikhosana’s home in Impendle, suspected the child was not Sikhosana’s and called the police.

After the court advised Sikhosana about legal representation, she applied for Legal Aid. When asked if she understood the charges against her, Sikhosana said, “Yes, I took the child from her mother and I will be pleading guilty to the charge”.

She was remanded in custody until July 23. — WR.
