Accused lawyer granted bail

2014-10-15 00:00

DISBARRED lawyer Sundeep Singh was granted bail of R10 000 in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Singh has been admitted to a private hospital since his arrest on theft charges in September, while his lawyers fought to prevent the state from moving him to a prison hospital.

He is accused of stealing thousands of rands belonging to one of his clients, that had been claimed from the Road Accident Fund.

In granting bail, magistrate Ntsoaki Ndawonde said the investigating officer had opposed bail on the flimsiest of grounds.

The original grounds for opposing Singh’s bail were that he was a flight risk, with claims that he had dual citizenship (of South Africa and India) and might interfere with witnesses.

Yesterday, however, the state conceded that it did not have solid grounds to oppose bail.

Ndawonde granted bail with conditions attached.

She ordered Singh to return to court on November 26 and not to interfere with witnesses.

“There is no need to impose any further conditions,” she said to the relieved Singh.
