IMPARTING dance knowledge and skill to underprivileged youngsters is one of the key principles that governs the B-Rock Dance Studio, which is hosting Activate.dance, a show crammed full of hip-hop, breakdance and contemporary dance, at the Hexagon Theatre, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, tonight, tomorrow and Saturday at 7.30 pm.

The studio was opened in April 2005 and at the end of the same year, Leanne Miskey, the company’s old- skool, nu-skool and hip-hop instructor, paid her way to Vancouver, Canada, to do extra training in various hip- hop styles for three months.

“I was trained by various instructors who dance and choreograph for artists such as the Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake, Mya and so on,” she said. “This was an extensive training time and I brought back a lot of fresh flavour to South Africa.

“B-Rock now has a dance crew which is often hired to perform at various company functions, car launches, promotions, parties and so on. A large interest of ours is to impart our dance knowledge and skill to the underprivileged and so we also sponsor many dancers in our studio, who basically train with us on scholarship.”

All the money raised from the Hexagon show — and two shows at Hilton College in May — will be used to help the dance company take a trip to Canada in September.

“We decided that this year, we want to broaden our experience and the whole dance crew is saving to go to Vancouver in September,” Miskey said. “We have planned this particular show to raise funds and help out those members of the crew who can’t really afford to go overseas.

“One of our instructors, Lucian Friedman (also a member of the crew) is from a previously disadvantaged background and so we are trying to find more sponsors for him, as he really cannot afford this trip on his own. We also have another three dancers in our crew who are also from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and we are trying to do what we can to support them.”

Dance fans can look forward to seeing 20 dance sequences, choreographed by four instructors, in Activate.dance at the Hexagon Theatre. Tickets are R45. To book, phone 033 260 5537 or send an email to hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
