Adams joins United as Larsen leaves for Bloem Celtics

FORMER Santos assistant coach Salie Adams has joined Maritzburg United as Gordon Igesund’s new assistant, after the departure of Clinton Larsen last week for Bloemfontein Celtic.

Larsen said he received an offer he could not refuse from Celtic to be assistant to Owen da Gama.

“It was a tough decision, especially after the relationship I had built with the players and with Gordon at United, but in the end the offer from Celtic was going to provide more security for myself and my family,” Larsen said last night.

Adams, who worked with Igesund in a number of capacities when Santos won the Premier Soccer League title in 2001/02, was an assistant at the club for seven years to coaches who included Clive Barker, Boebie Solomons, Muhsin Ertugral, Raould Poulsen, Roger de Sa, David Notoane, Jean-Marc Ithier and David Bright. He also worked as an assistant to Eddie Lewis at Manning Rangers.

Adams has grounding at Maritzburg United that few coaches can claim to — his long career as a player in the Federation Professional League included two years at the club in 1982 and 1983.

The new United assistant told “It is great to be back after 27 years to serve the club that I hold dear to my heart. When I was offered the opportunity of the interview I did not hesitate.

“I want to say to the supporters of the Team of Choice: ‘I don’t have to be here, I want be here’.”

Igesund said: “I did a lot of interviews with guys from Johannesburg, Cape Town and from Pietermaritzburg — but I knew immediately Salie was the right choice. A coach always wants to make sure his assistant is someone on the same wavelength.”

Igesund, meanwhile, said he will make some big announcements in the next two days on his new signings for the 2009/10 PSL season.

United, who have parted ways with 14 players from last season, have thus far made just two signings in defenders James Madidilane and Byrone Henricks.
