Addicott makes the difference for KZN Inland

2009-10-03 00:00

KZN Inland recovered from a poor start to come out reasonably satisfied after the second day of their three-day Provincial Challenge match against Western Province at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

The home team made 250 for six in their allotted 85 overs on the back of three substantial partnerships and a splendid century by Glen Addicott. WP were 65 without loss at the close.

After rain washed away Thursday’s play it came as no surprise when WP captain Martin Walters asked KZN Inland skipper Tim Drummond to bat first. The mornings at the PMB Oval are always kind to new-ball bowlers. Mario Olivier struck in the fourth over and next over Gershwin Rabie claimed Dipak Anand leaving the hosts four for two.

In strode Addicott and he played with care against an accurate WP attack on a pitch that offered variable bounce. He scored freely in his 104 before leg-spinner Abdul Aziz Temoor finally got his man.

Addicott put on 52 runs for the third wicket with Bradley Moses and 101 for the fifth with Doug Watson (53 not out), while the player/coach also added 58 with Ollie Humphries.

Inland opening bowler Richard Hlela enjoyed a superb spell, constantly asking questions of WP openers Alistair Gray and Moeneeb Abass in their reply. Hlela gave nothing away and forced the batsmen to play just about ever delivery. The seam and swing bowler’s spell reflected eight overs, seven maidens and four runs.

Gray and Abass stuck it out and then blossomed as the shadows lengthened.

With one day lost, the match is almost certain to end in a draw today. Sunday sees the Provincial Challenge 45-over match between the two sides.

Meanwhile, in the women’s provincial tournament, KZN Inland meet Griqualand West Saturday and Free State Sunday, both at Varsity’s number two oval.

Inland, under the captaincy of Cherri Cannon and coach Paul Atkins, the English professional, will be looking for as positive a start to their season as possible.
