Addington Hospital chosen to deal with Ebola in KZN

2014-08-15 00:00

DURBAN’S beachfront Addington Hospital will be ground zero for any potential Ebola outbreak in KZN.

Addington is one of 11 hospitals across the country that have been selected to treat Ebola.

Built for the Fifa World Cup 2010, the hospital’s special isolation unit has eight wards fully equipped with machinery to deal with any outbreak.

Provincial Health Department spokesperson Desmond Motha said: “It is a fully staffed unit with its own doctors, nurses and radiographers as well as employees trained in dealing with communicable diseases.”

Meanwhile, the Department of Health has admitted it will “profile” visitors as they enter the country and may subject them to a health inspection. National Health Department spokesperson Joe Maila said that by September 1 the national department would have a presence at all ports of entry to “protect South Africans”.
