Affordable online back-up service

2008-05-02 00:00

Business owners and managers probably view the storage of information as a tricky and cumbersome process at the best of times, without even taking into consideration the added challenges related to the loss of information brought about by frequent power outages.

Oscar Dass, a Gauteng-based Information Technology professional, has relocated to Pietermaritzburg in order to explore the various government- and private sector-related opportunities on offer in the city.

The new business is known as Back-It-Up and Dass basically offers a fully-automated and affordable online data back-up service.

“While many people accept that it [back-ups] should be done, they do not follow through in practice. And yet when a computer crashes, many realise that the greatest loss is their data or personal information.”

He aims to target a variety of markets, including home users, Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and larger businesses.

“With these [SME] users, emphasis is mainly on financial data and the legal requirements of storage and retention for five years. However, they generally forget that critical spreadsheets, word documents and general communication files are just as critical in the day-to-day operations of running the business,” he says.
