Africa Bike Week

2012-05-03 00:00

AFRICA Bike Week’s exponential growth has proved to be a boon to South Coast businesses, with several outlets reporting huge growth in trading during the event.

This year’s event, which ended on Tuesday, was the biggest and best, said the organiser, Vicky Erasmus-Wentzel of Wozani Africa Events.

About 25 000 bikes descended on Margate for Harley Davidson’s Africa Bike Week at the weekend. This was 5 000 more than attended last year.

The 2 670 bikes that rode in the mass parade from Shelly Centre to Port Shepstone and then to Margate was also a significant increase on the 2011 run.

Erasmus-Wentzel said businesses in the area, particularly pubs, reported good trading at the weekend, while regular Africa Bike Week stallholders also noticed increased turnover from last year.

She said Margate businesses had been tolerant of road closures in the town.

South Coast Tourism CEO Michael Bertram said he had received only positive comments on the event. Holidaymakers wanting to attend Africa Bike Week had booked accommodation as far as Scottburgh, he added.

Tommie Roos, of Clearwater Harley Davidson in Johannesburg, rode down to Margate with a group of 100 bikers.

“It was our third time … It was much bigger than last year. The atmosphere was great, the people were great.

“The culture of Africa Bike Week is growing and we had record sales at our stall this year,” he added.
