Africa: ‘Enormous opportunities’

2012-07-04 00:00

ALEC Hogg, financial journalist and founder CEO of Moneyweb, will speak to Witness readers at a breakfast to be held on Friday, 27 July, at the Golden Horse Casino in Pietermaritzburg.

The event will be co-hosted by wealth management specialists Glacier by Sanlam. The casino is a partner in the event.

Hogg recently joined about 700 other business and political leaders at the Africa Economic Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Optimistic about the economic prospects of southern Africa, Hogg will share his insights — and provide guidance to businesses wanting to take advantage of the enormous opportunities offered by the “African century”.

Hogg founded Moneyweb in 1997 from a room above his garage and guided it through its JSE listing in 1999, leading it to a pre-eminent position in South Africa’s online and radio media landscape. He enjoyed a two-year break on his stud farm in the Midlands during 2010 and 2011, and returned to the fray in February 2012, refreshed and as enthusiastic as ever.

Apart from a two-and-a-half year stint as a group general manager with Absa, he has spent his career in financial journalism as a writer, editor, broadcaster, columnist and publisher. During this time he held senior positions in the print media, served as the head of news input at SABC TV News and ran his own publishing business.

The recipient of many awards, he was the youngest winner of the South Africa’s Financial Reporter of the Year Award, aged 22, in 1983.

Hogg works in Johannesburg but lives in Mooi River with his wife Jeanette where he still indulges his other passion — horses.

Tickets for the breakfast and presentation by Hogg, which will be followed by a panel discussion and question time, go on sale today at R175. Tables of ten are available at R1 650. Book at 033 355 1110 or
