Africans have turned their back on their culture

2009-06-13 00:00

THERE have been many explanations about how the world came about but all of them point to one thing, regardless of what name it is given, and that is God.

When he put people in the different corners of Earth, he gave those population groups more than enough resources with which to survive. The Aborigines in Australia had it all until the forefathers of modern-day Australians just about wiped them out. The same happened to the Native Americans at the hands of the forefathers of modern-day Americans.

A picture has always been painted of African people in general, and Nguni people in particular, as having been non-believers before the colonisers came with the Bible and religion.

Needless to say, this is a distorted picture as they had uMvelingqangi who they prayed to, and because different population groups lived differently, the manner in which they related to their maker was not the same.

As Zulus, we slaughtered beasts and made offerings to the ancestors who are our light, and who communicate with God on our behalf, just like other population groups had their own channels for communicating with the maker.

With the arrival of the colonisers, indigenous Africans were introduced to, among other things, the Bible and religion the non-African way.

One of the shortcomings of indigenous African people was how spineless they were, and continue to be, as they chose to forsake what God had given them and opted for that which had been reserved for other population groups.

I do not know what is more shocking: adopting foreign practices or totally forsaking their own practices. The perceived emancipation of Africans through the Bible and religion according to the colonisers was the undoing of all that is African in terms of culture, religion and way of life.

Of course there is nothing wrong with the Bible and religion as colonisers practised it, as that is how God communicates with them and vice versa.

What baffles me is how Africans have not only turned their backs on their cultures but also how they have tried to outdo the custodians of the Christian religion.

You just have to look at how black churches have uniforms for their members, while white church members go to church wearing just about anything.

If one did not know better, one would think it’s my fellow black people who introduced white people to Christianity and the Bible, and not the other way around.

You just have to look at the activity in predominantly black churches in comparison with the white churches.

My fellow black people are no different from a person who is given a lift and decides that he or she would make a better driver than the owner of the vehicle and wants to steer the vehicle him or herself.

I have no qualms with religion and the Bible but I have a serious issue when people forsake and throw away what God gave them.
