Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr.

WELL-KNOWN Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr two nights ago allegedly grabbed a reporter by the throat at the Deuriemikke music festival in Pretoria’s Loftus Versveld.

Gavin Prins, entertainment writer for Rapport and presenter of TV gossip programme Glitterati, had been investigating whether Hofmeyr’s popularity was dwindling after the debacle surrounding his alleged extra-marital affair.

Prins said this had evidently got back to Hofmeyr.

According to Prins, Hofmeyr initially gave him a filthy look in Loftus’s presidential suite. Shortly afterward, Hofmeyr charged at him in the bar section, and grabbed him by the throat: “I thought I was going to be smashed against the wall … it’s amazing how big his hand is. All I heard was ‘Gaan kak [go and s***]’. His eyes were huge.”

Other VIPs observed the incident in silence.

Hofmeyr said yesterday on his website that he had an exchange of words with Gavin behind the stage.

Tim du Plessis, editor of Rapport, said the newspaper regrets the incident as it is their job to report on high-profile individuals who are in the news.
