Aids: Sadtu launch campaign to help teachers, children

2008-07-06 00:00

THE SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) in KwaZulu-Natal is to provide Aids drugs to infected teachers and their families as part of a Prevention and Palliative Care for Teachers, Orphans and Vulnerable children (PPCT-OVC) project.

Union spokesman Sipho “KK” Nkosi, said the project seeks to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids by encouraging teachers to abide by the ABC (Abstain, Be faithful and Condomise) approach, while encouraging children to abstain from sexual activities.

As well as providing ARVs to teachers, the union will offer support, advice, skills development and money to 700 orphans and vulnerable children from 14 schools in the province.

Nkosi said that R30 000 has been budgeted to launch the project in all seven Sadtu regions.

“Sadtu KZN has trained all provincial, regional and branch leaders on this project. We have also trained 14 caregivers stationed in each selected school where orphans and vulnerable children are studying …” he said.
