Air force to exercise its freedom of Margate

2010-11-19 00:00

THE Hibiscus Coast Municipality (HCM) hosts a weekend that will honour the South African Air Force mobile deployment wing in Margate and Port Shepstone from today.

The deployment wing will exercise its freedom of the town by displaying its capabilities.

Tonight will see a gala dinner hosted by the HCM at the Margate Civic Hall to mark the arrival of the military in the area.

Tomorrow there will be a parade at the Margate Airport that will serve as an opportunity for the South African Defence Force to show the abilities of the force in its 90th year.

HCM municipal manager Sbu Mkhize said it has become an HCM and a military tradition to celebrate the event with parades that demonstrate the capabilities and air strength of the air force and its deployment wing in particular.

Tomorrow’s parade will move through the streets of Port Shepstone, starting at the HCM offices and ending in Connor Street. The public is welcome to watch the soldiers march past in their smart uniforms.

KZN Premier Zweli Mkhize will also receive with the Freedom of the Hibiscus Coast Municipality at the function in Connor Street.

Sunday will be golf day at Margate Country Club.

The municipal manager said the celebrations are important because the air force plays an important role in society. “The members of the SAAF are valued by the HCM. It needs to be remembered that this is the very same force that constructed the Margate Airport in the early 1970s and this is why next weekend’s event is so important,” Mkhize said.
