Airport gets R40 mln injection

2010-11-05 00:00

THE city airport is set to undergo a major facelift with the help of a R40 million cash injection from the provincial treasury.

This came to light at yesterday’s sitting of the executive committee, which revealed that the runway also needs to be resurfaced almost immediately.

The committee was told that SA Airlink has threatened to cancel flights owing to the poor state of the runway and the Civil Aviation Authority has “condemned the runway and expressed concern [regarding] urgency to address resurfacing”.

The acting executive manager of the airport, Dr Julie Dyer, said a team from the treasury department has conducted a feasibility study for the management and development options.

Various plans were drawn up and the department responded with a cash injection of R40 million, which will be paid over three years.
