Alcatel launches cellphone aimed at the elderly

2014-02-21 00:00

CAPE TOWN — A cellphone targetted specifically at older people is now available in South Africa.

The Alcatel OT-2000 will be in shops soon after its launch yesterday.

The phone was developed for people with less nimble fingers, and hearing or vision loss.

It has bigger buttons, and works with hearing aids and cochlear implants.

“Most elderly people can’t or don’t want to use a smartphone. This phone is easy to use because it has bigger buttons, a clear screen and is light,” said Alcatel’s marketing manager Dale Strydom.

“The phone, which will cost about R500, was developed for people with hand, hearing and vision disability. If you suffer from arthritis and similar conditions, the phone is light and easy to hold.

“You also don’t need your reading glasses to use it,” he said.

Strydom said the phone’s most impressive feature is its emergency call button.

“The emergency call button is on the back of the phone, which means you can’t press it by accident and make a call.

“When it is pressed, three contacts of your choice are automatically dialled and sent an SMS. The phone keeps dialling until it is answered and is switched straight to loudspeaker.” This means the caller could speak even if they were no longer holding the phone.

More than 2,5 million of these phones have been sold worldwide.
